Billy Blue College of Design
Creative direction & design: Tash White
Mark received: High distinction
Completed as the first assignment for Publishing & Media as part of the Diploma of Graphic Design at Billy Blue College of Design, the brief for this project was to design a double page magazine spread informed by Takenobu Igarashi, using advanced typesetting and print media techniques. Students were provided with a number of assets, and were restricted in the number of images used.
As this was the first print layout design I had undertaken, I started by completing a number of sketches to explore different compositions and ideas, while staying within the limitations given. Once I felt confident with my sketches, and the direction my design was heading in, I spent time setting up my document grid, parent pages, page numbers, and basic typesetting. All of these steps were documented to ensure a thorough understanding of the task at hand.
Moving onto the design itself, I mocked up multiple different options to experiment with different alignments and compositions. During this stage, I wanted my designs to reflect Igarashi’s use of geometry and bold colours. Utilising lecturer and peer feedback, I refined my final design for presentation.
This assignment earnt a high distinction, with a mark of 95/100.
