Unfold

Billy Blue College of Design

the brief:

Art direction and design: Tash White

Mark received: High Distinction

Also completed across two assignments for the subject of Visual Language of Design as part of the Diploma of Graphic Design at Billy Blue College of Design, these designs focus on basic princples and elements of design, and are for a fictional exhibit named Unfold: A Celebration of Design Through Time.

Postcard designs were to be handmade with ordinary objects found around our home, and were to revolve around two distinct elements of design: Texture and colour, specifically.

Posters were to be constructed digitally and be informed by two principles of design. I chose emphasis, and balance.

the execution:

For these assignments, I took a lot of inspiration from various household items, from yarn, patterned fabrics, coloured construction paper, and basic kitchen ingredients such as uncooked rice. While designing both postcards, I spent a lot of time investigating different elements of Australian landscapes, taking inspiration from blooming flowers and paperbark trees especially.

Moving onto production, I assembled mockups to test my construction methods and get a feel for how they moved, especially since I was working with items I couldn’t affix to my postcard base like rice grains and plain flour. Both designs were photographed in natural light with a professional grade DSLR.

Both posters were designed to reflect distinct characteristics of the cities of Tokyo, Japan and Marrakech, Morocco. For the Marrakech poster, I opted for a paper cut out effect and carried across the colour palette from one of the postcards. Tokyo’s design was inspired by urban Japanese architecture and utilised personal holiday photos and royalty free photos. Both designs were constructed in both Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop and both assignments earned a mark of

high distinction.
